Every week, I’m not only hosting the Talking Tech with Alex Zaharov-Reutt show on Saturday nights at 6pm AEDT, but I’m also doing the Tech Talk with Alex Zaharov-Reutt show at 10.30 to 11am Saturday mornings on Radio 2CC, and as is the case every week – we’re jam packed with news about AI, Apple, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (with Chris Griffith) and more!
Wow, what a huge show this week! I was with the amazing Radio 2CC Breakfast Host, Stephen Cenatiempo – the regular Canberra Weekender host Tatjana Clancy is on a break and she’ll be back soon.
Here’s the interview in full, what we spoke about, with links, is listed after that, so please listen and read on!
1. Cyber attacks have only grown in intensity at an ever faster pace than they did during and since the pandemic, with global stats firm Statista showing cyber crime is expected to surge from $9.22 TRILLION in 2024 to $13.82 TRILLION with a T by 2028.
Sophos has just launched its 2024 edition of “The Future of Cyber Security in Asia Pacific and Japan“, which I wrote about here (and have a fantastic video interview with Sophos ANZ MD, John Donovan, and Cybermindz.org founder, Peter Coroneos).
I’ll be speaking about this with the Sophos Field Chief Technology Officer for APJ, Aaron Bugal, on my TNTRadio.live TV show live about it today at 6pm AEDT (Sat 2 March 2024) – and it will be available on demand later.
So, with the news today that cyber guidelines are finally going to start holding directors liable for cyber breaches – something we’ve heard about for years, what do company directors need to know, and what part does burnout and human error play in cyber breaches?
2. Apple EV car cancelled: Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters have emerged saying that Apple is officially giving up on its ambitions to not only build an electric car, but one that drives autonomously. This is a shock as they’ve been at it for a decade – what are they going to do with all of those people now?
3. There’s also Australia’s largest private satellite called Optimus, which is being launched this month by SpaceX, and which will be like AAA in the US or NRMA in Australia offering “roadside assistance” to crucial infrastructure in space – what are the details here?
Note: I’ll be speaking about this with Xavier Orr on my TNTRadio.live TV show live about it today at 6pm AEDT (Sat 2 March 2024) – and it will be available on demand later.
Xavier Orr, the CEO and Co-Founder of Advanced Navigation, the world’s most determined innovator in AI robotics and navigation technologies, with the company having just joined forces with Australia’s own privately “Space Machines Company” to launch Australia’s largest private satellite called Optimus into space, in March, on board a SpaceX rocket. The vehicle will provide repair, refuel and upgrade services to crucial space infrastructure directly in Earth’s orbit (think AAA or NRMA for space).
Optimus will be equipped with Advanced Navigation’s space-grade inertial navigation system, the Boreas X90. It will allow the vehicle to ‘jump’ between orbits and ‘dock’ at different satellites with ultra high precision and accuracy.
4. Nuclear news: A UK company in Sheffield can now weld a full-size nuclear reaction vessel in under 24 hours, instead of the usual year-long time frame that it takes. This is going to massively accelerate the ability for Australia and the world to bring back cheap energy through nuclear technology – more information here!
5. The big “Mobile World Congress” has just wrapped up in Barcelona, with Nokia phones doing a deal with Mattel to produce pink Barbie phones, while computer maker Lenovo has released a laptop with a transparent screen. What else was announced and showcased? Read about it and see it all in my video interview with legendary Australian technology journalist Chris Griffith here!
6. Samsung has announced the Galaxy Ring, a wearable smart AI wellness companion – what will it do, what is the expected battery life, when is it expected to launch – and does Apple have anything similar planned? Details here at CNET, and here at Tom’s Guide.
7. HP has launched its broadest new range of AI enhanced laptops coming into stores from THIS MONTH – what’s on offer, what are the capabilities? Here’s an article from CRN about it.
8. iOS 18 is due towards the end of the year, and rumours say even the iPhone XR, the oldest iPhone to get the current iOS 17 will be supported, although a subsequent rumour says the iPhone XR, XS and XR Max won’t get the update, with the iPhone 11 to be the oldest device to get the update. What else are we expecting, this year is meant to be all about AI, right?
