Imagine a rechargeable battery you can safely recharge to full in less than 20 mins, with a 25+ year battery cycle lifespan, with no thermal runaway fire problem, using AI smarts to optimise itself, and which operates well beyond Li-Ion’s temperature range. This battery of the future exists TODAY and it’s called ZapBatt!

ZapBatt – it’s the future of batteries today, but they’re not the batteries most people are using yet, and my video interviews with ZapBatt CEO and founder Charlie Welch embedded a little further below, which I conducted this week and last year – are extremely illuminating, and are definitely MUST WATCH.

But what’s the situation today? For most of us, lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable power source for the laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart watches, power tools, wireless security cameras, electric cars, electric scooters, home battery systems and other devices we use every day, but in 2023, there’s a MASSIVE problem with these batteries.

The problem is they’re catching fire, with the resulting fires virtually impossible to put out until the batteries have burnt through the chemicals contained within, spewing out toxic smoke that is the very opposite of environmentally friendly.

Even in Australia, our “Competition and Consumer Commission” has issued recalls on LG Home Battery solar power storage systems, urging Australians to IMMEDIATELY switch them off, and has also issued a separate warning for the lithium-ion batteries used in all our everyday devices, advising consumers to look out for battery damage, to not leave batteries on charge, and more, all to avoid extremely dangerous battery fires.

Whether people are treating their electric scooters in a rough manner, whether they’re purchasing cheap replacement batteries online, or are using third party charging systems that aren’t genuine, or whether the batteries get damaged in some way, batteries powered by traditional Lithium-Ion batteries are causing massive fires, and in greater numbers than ever.

These fires have caused freighter ships loaded with electric cars to sink, they have damaged other cars in parking stations when they catch fire, they’ve caused people to die from the toxic smoke, and these fires can even re-ignite a day or more later if the damaged batteries haven’t yet burnt through all the chemicals.

Thankfully, there is a solution, and it is through using Lithium Titanate as the battery chemistry, as Charlie Welch, the CEO and Founder of ZapBatt explains in the video below, coupled with a battery operating system that can actually work with a variety of battery chemistries.

So, let’s take a look at my most recent video interview with Charlie, before we continue with the article, so please watch and read on!

As you will hear Charlie stating in the video interview above, one of the huge advantages of Lithium Titanate or LTO battery chemistries is that it enables a FULL charge in less than 20 minutes, with Charlie stating 10 to 15 minutes.

This is incredible, given that most batteries take hours to charge, and with even fast charging only working to charge many mobile phones to only 50% in 30 minutes.

Then there’s the problem of Li-ion batteries having relatively short charging cycles, from 500 recharges to 1500, after which the battery goes down to 80% of its life, and unable to maintain peak power delivery.

ZapBatt’s LTO batteries are capable of 15,000+ charging cycles, which equates to 25+ years of active use – another MASSIVE advantage over today’s widely used rechargeable batteries – and they retain 90% capacity after that time, so can actually continue being used even longer.

Here’s a summary of the topics I spoke with Charlie about:

  • I started by introducing Charlie Welch, noting it has been a year and a half since we last spoke, and asked him to remind us why LTO batteries are so superior to exiting rechargeable battery technologies
  • We then discussed the runaway thermal reactions that damaged lithium-ion batteries have been causing, and have increasingly been in the news about, spewing toxic fumes and causing massive damage to life, limb and property
  • Charlie shared the advances the technology has made since we spoke last year, as well as going further into ZapBatt’s partnership with Toshiba, and when we can expect to see ZapBatt’s LTO batteries appearing inside brands and products we already know well
  • Sharing what else we need to know about ZapBatt, and how the technology and sector will evolve over the next few years, Charlie then answered my usual closing questions, sharing a memory of his first personal computer, and great advice he has received in life, then finishing with his final message to the viewers and readers.

So… ZapBatt’s technology is the battery revolution we’ve been waiting for, and coupled with the operating system ZapBatt uses to manage its batteries and battery chemistries, the future where batteries are safer and longer-lasting than ever can’t come quickly enough.
