Samsung has launched its 6th-generation Fold6 and Flip6 smartphones, its new Watch7 and Watch Ultra, new Galaxy Buds3 and 3 Pro, a new Galaxy Ring AI-powered health companion, and upgraded new AI capabilities, whether done on device, in the cloud, or both ways. Read on!
Samsung has held its mid-year Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris earlier this week, with its second-generation of generative AI capabilities now available across the Samsung ecosystem – all while Apple is yet to deliver the generative AI it announced at WWDC 2024 across select iPhones, iPads and Macs.
There’s plenty more detail below, but first, here’s the full keynote from Paris. It’s just over 1 hour long, so it’s like watching a TV show. The new phones and watches will be available on July 31 in Australia, and the Galaxy Ring is slated to come later this year to our shores. Here’s the video:
When Samsung first launched its Galaxy AI features earlier this year, they were initially exclusive to the S24 range. The initial range of features was back ported to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, S23+, S23, S23 FE, Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, and Samsung’s Tab S9 Ultra, Tab S9+ and Tab S9 tablets.
There are now exclusive new AI features we’ll get into in a moment for the Flip6 and Fold6 that will arrive to other Samsung devices towards the end of the year, but let’s first see what the existing AI features are that 100 million Samsung users already have access to, with 200 million Samsung users expected to have access by the end of the year.
You can see all the existing AI features here, but in short, they include Circle to Search,Live Translate. Photo Assist, Chat Assist, Note Assist, Web Assist, Transcribe Assist, an Interpreter, and Instant Slow-mo. Here’s a video on Circle to Search:
The new next-gen AI features include all that came before, plus what seems to be an improve Circle to Search, a new ‘FlexCam’ mode for the Galaxy Z Flip6 that offers AI-powered auto-zoom, as well as being able to hold the Flip6 like a traditional cam-corder (and see the image on both the inner and outer screen).
There’s an improve Note Assist, an improved Interpreter, an improved Live Translate that now has 19 languages, including Aussie English, Cantonese and Canadian French dialectsalongside three new languages including Arabic, Indonesian and Russian.
Live Translate has been improved, as has Photo Assist, and these improvements will come to other already AI-capable Galaxy devices by the end of the year.
So, what of Samsung’s newest Flip6 and Fold6 folding smartphones?
Samsung has created its slimmest and lightest Galaxy Z series ever, obviously optimised for portability. The Fold6 has a larger outer screen when folded shut, and when opened, has a screen that is more square – it’s definitely the best looking Fold device yet, as well as being the most durable, with “Armor Aluminium”, a new dual-hinge designed with a strengthen folding edge, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Both the Flip and Fold6 have the enhanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Galaxy with CPU, GPU and NPU, and not only does the Fold6 have a bigger vapour chamber for more effective cooling that the Fold5, but but Flip6 now comes with a vapour chamber, too.
