Dreame doesn’t just want to be seen as creating cutting-edge technology, but also cleaning-edge tech, with robotics a core technology not just in its flagship robotic vacuums, but also with its robot dog, and in the future, humanoid robots and maybe even robot cars!
The robot vacuum market has never had more players, be it Ecovacs, iRobot Roomba, Samsung, LG, Neato, Dyson, Eufy, Xiaomi, Roborock and even brands like Kogan are rebadging cheaper Chinese models – and of course, there’s Dreame, which has just launched its most premium, flagship model yet, the L20 Ultra, with a new upgraded automatic base station.
Launched a little earlier this year at IFA 2023 in Germany, where the L20 Ultra’s features, including the AI-driven MopExtend technology billed as a “new breakthrough” that provides in-depth edge cleaning was on show, the L20 Ultra was not only recognised as “Best of IFA”, but also received numerous media awards.
As Dreame explains, the L20 Ultra is a smart home appliance which takes detailed cleaning to a whole new level, a fully automatic robotic vacuum that not only cleans floors, but also cleans itself, while also being the first Dreame product to feature the new logo.
So, given that a round robotic vacuum clearly has issues in being able to reach corners and edges, how has Dreame solved this problem, and how does it work?
That question is answered below, but first, here’s the full Australian launch event, after which is more detail on the L20 Ultra, and even further below that is a lengthier video demonstration on the L20 Ultra by one of Dreame Technologies’ technical experts, Walter. You’ll also find the Q&A session from the event, and lastly, a demonstration of the Dreame robot dog which is on sale in China and which will come to Australia in the future.
Here’s the Australian Dreame Technology launch event!
Dreame explains it has developed its own exclusive core technologies, dubbed the Mop-Extend and Duo-Scrub mopping system to provide a better solution to the issue.
The Mop-Extend tech incorporates “several Position Sensitive Detectors”, which the company says are able to automatically and precisely identify corners and edges.
When these corners and edges are identified, the Mop-Extend tech is further activated and extends the mop to the wall edges as closely as possible, for what is dubbed “a deeper, closer, and corner-to-corner cleaning experience.”
Furthermore, the algorithms powering Mop-Extend’s smarts help L20 Ultra to excel in terms of edge cleaning in even complex house environments, which Dreame says ensures “consumers’ edge cleaning needs are addressed more thoroughly and efficiently.”
The Dub-Scrub mopping system has two high-speed rotary mops, as you will see in the videos above and below, meaning the L20 Ultra is designed to “tackle stubborn stains and worn-in dirt.”
As you’d expect, there are additional built-in dirt detection technologies, which uses data garnered from previous cleaning cycles to detect whether the rooms require additional cleaning.
The example given is of the L20 Ultra responding to seasonal changes and the associated impact, such as pet fur, pollen or additional dirt brought into the home, with that info used “to deliver a level of cleaning synchronised with Dreame Technology’s home appliances.”
Below is more information on the all round-performance and advanced cleaning capabilities of the L20, but now I present a longer demo by Dreame Technologies expert, Walter:
Let’s learn more about the L20 Ultra’s “Automatic All-round Performance”.
Here, Dreame highlights the newly upgraded automatic base station which offers an even more automatic cleaning experience, when compared with previous models.
Featuring “DualBoost 2.0 technology” and a 3.2L dust bag, the automatic base station can store the collected dust for up to an impressive 75 days without before you need to manually take out the dust.
In addition, the L20 Ultra also cleans and dries the two mops by itself. When the mops get dirty, the automatic base station washes them using some of the water stored in the 4.5L water tank. After the self-cleaning is finished, the mops will be rapidly dried with hot air, which can last up to 2 hours, to prevent mildew formation and bad odours.
Want even more automation? You’ve got it, with auto water refilling and auto cleaning solutions refilling.
Presumably because it can be connected to a tap, the L20 Ultra can automatically refill the water tank to keep the mop wet, in preparation for efficient cleaning at any time, and the cleaning solutions can also be set up to automatically refill themselves as well, making things as simple as possible for users.
What are the details of the advanced cleaning system?
The system has different functions to cope with different house environments, and uses what is called the “advanced Vormax Suction System”.
This promises optimised vacuuming efficiency to pull household debris up from rugs, out of carpets, and off hard floors, packing 7,000Pa of suction power to do so.
We’re told this power “guarantees effective dust removal while achieving a remarkable high pick-up rate”, while a liftable rubber brush provides easy hair detangling with mop-removal technology for a powerful cleaning within the adaptable design.
There’s even ultrasonic carpet recognition and mop-removal technology combined for enhanced carpet and rug cleaning.
When carpets and rugs are recognised, users can decide which option to conduct from three carpet cleaning options: mops removal, mops raising, or carpet avoidance, coping with different kinds of carpets and rugs, or going so far as to avoiding the wetting of carpets and rugs at all.
Other intelligent features include “Pathfinder Smart Navigation”, which uses AI learning and 3D structure light technology to scan the room ahead, recognise any obstacles and avoid them, preventing items that may have been left on the floor by mistake from being vacuumed up, which, in turn, prevents interruptions in your planned cleaning process and ensures completion of the task at hand.
While no such tech can (yet) be absolutely 100% perfect, Dreame’s representatives at the launch explained, in answer to a question during the Q&A session, that this should also ensure no accidents by puppies leaving doggy-do in unexpected places get sucked into the unit and smeared around the place, which is a definite win for AI detecting technology!
Here is the L20 Ultra Q&A session – at the end of this article, you’ll see a great demo of the Dreame Robot Dog, so please watch and read on!
So, as Dreame confidently states, its flagship L20 Ultra combines upgraded power, AI technology, and years of R&D to deliver a robotic vacuum that will prove to be a revolution in cleaning for its owner, and assets “the leap-forward introduction of Mop Extend Technology delivers superior cleaning, enabling the L20 Ultra to get closer to hard-to-reach edges, as well as clean in between furniture and smaller spaces.”
